Hello Dear Biomech-lers:

I want to know if somebody can give information about changes in joint
height, when a joint is subjected to static axial compressive loads. It is
known that some articular structures (extracellular matrix) are able to
deform in order to accommodate physiological loads and shape, volume and
height of the extracellular matrix change are reported to change (e.g.
Guilak, 1995). However, and despite the changes occurring in individual
tissues of the joint structures, are these changes translated in terms of
changes in the height of the joint (as a whole). Specially at the lower limb,
is the distance between the edges of a certain joint altered under static
physiological compressive forces (e.g. standing still)? How much are these
deformations? Are these changes in height time and load magnitude dependent?
Mathematically, how are these relationships described? If these relationships
do exist, would they be similar for all joints of the lower limb (ankle, knee
and hip)? Please, note that I am not referring to the heel pad.

I may have too many questions for a single posting, however, if someone came
up with some responses (or key references) I'd appreciate. Those respondents
