I am looking for definitive evidence that distance running (5K plus) is more harmful on hard surfaces (concrete, roads) than on soft surfaces (dirt trails). It seems to be a common belief that the softer surface provides greater protection from forces...is it possible that the softer surface almost promotes greater motion in the lower extremity, requiring greater muscle effort? Any information would be greatly appreciated...this is a hotly debated topic in my kinesiology courses.

Thank you,

Dan Cipriani
