Dear colleagues:

Some time ago I posted a message requesting info on underwater camera
systems. I am grateful to all the individuals who kindly responded to my
request. Enclosed are my original request and the replies. The responses
were properly edited.

I sort of lean to the Sony Lipstick camera (Sony DXCLS1/1) suggested by
Margy Galloway. Is there any US manufacturer of the waterprof housing for
the Sony Lipstick cameras? I would appreciate any additional input on this.

The original request:

I am currently working on an underwater motion analysis project and looking
at the camera options. The camera we have is a waterproof housing system
with waterproof cable. But it does not have a shutter. (I expect this will
cause problems in digitizing blurry images.)

Is there any underwater camera systems available with CCD head inside
waterproof housing w/ zoom, focus, and shutter control? What about the
system w/ gen-lock capability? The waterproof cable must allow me to control
the camera outside the water. I would appreciate your valuable input.

At present we try to do some 3-D reconstruction from underwater movement
We use a mirror setup and one 'home made' housing in which we have a CCD
head with zoom focus and shutter control

Many good video cameras (like the Sony TRV9000) have after-market housings
(like the Stingray) made for them already. Some offer on-housing control,
some offer remote control, too (either wires or not). Are you taking
pictures of
divers or animals?

I am working also on underwater analysis in Japan. I think a new underwater
camera satisfies your request. The camera was manufactured by the Victor
Corp. and the Yamaha corp. promotes it.

We built a plexiglass box to hold a standard Panasonic camcorder.
The box was lowered into the water at the end of the pool to obtain a
sagittal view of the freestyle flip-turn. The shutter, focus etc was set
the box was lowered into the pool. The video was clear enought to digitize
with the Peak System.

Actually here at SFSU we have a graduate student who built his own housings
his thesis. He is in the process of writing that procedure out ...it is
less expensive than purchasing one...2 housing were built for less than 100

the only catch is that there is no cable coming out of the housing... these
housings were built for camcorders and all settings are set prior to

We use a Sony Lipstick camera which has an option for 1/1000 shutter speed,
and have bought the waterproof housing separately from a company here in
Sydney called

I'm not sure who actually makes the housing.

The camera unfortunately does not have a zoom, but you can get 3 different
size lenses. It cannot be controlled from outside.

When we did an underwater investigation at Washington State University
many years ago, we put the camera on the other side of an underground
window. I don't think that exists at BSU, but you might consider an
installation. The window was immediately below the water surface and about
3 feet wide and 2 feet tall. Communication between the pool level and you
was difficult, but with 2 way radios, I think it can be done. The pictures
obtained were great.

Hello. My name is Ji-Hang Lee
I am a Motor Control student in Univ. of Oregon working on Ph.D.
Regarding your Underwater camera request on biomch-L, I thought about those
video housing systems used in SCUBA diving such as ikelite or underwater
kinetics or sea & sea brands. (Just a thought) You may check out those in
your local dive shops. ( I just happenrd to be an diving instructor)

Dr.Russel Best at VUT in Melbourne, Australia.

Can you explain to me what you what and why you want those features? Also
can you explain what type of shutter control do you want. Also is 25 Hz
frame rate fast enough for you . What to do mean by gen-lock ?
