  • Biomedical Engineering Graduate Fellowships

The Joint Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) - University of
Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) Biomedical Engineering and Medical
Physics PhD Program is pleased to announce federal and institutional funds
to support Biomedical Engineering doctoral students. Federal funds are
available through the US Department of Education Graduate Assistance in
Areas of National Need (GAANN) Program. Graduate students with
demonstrated superior ability, excellent academic records, and with
financial need are eligible. This program is intended to increase the
number of US citizens (nationals or permanent residents) who receive
    doctoral degrees in Biomedical Engineering.

Doctoral fellows will be eligible for full financial support for a minimum
of two years provided they maintain good academic standing and satisfactory
progress. Fellows will participate in ongoing teaching and research
activities. GAANN Fellowships provide a yearly stipend. In addition,
tuition, fees, and conference travel support is provided for the first 2
years with additional support for subsequent years provided from ongoing
research programs. Current teaching and research within the Biomedical
Engineering Dept. at WPI focuses on three general areas of biomedical
    engineering: 1) Biomechanics & biomaterials; 2) Biosensors & medical
instrumentation; and 3) Medical imaging. Additional research and teaching
directions are available at UMMS and through collaborations with local
universities and the medical device/biotechnology industry.

Interested candidates should submit a letter requesting a graduate
admissions packet to the Joint WPI-UMMS Biomedical Engineering and Medical
Physics Program. Please state your interest in the GAANN Fellowships and a
potential area of research involvement. Letters can be addressed to:
