  • CfH: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

    Subject: ALS experts
Sender: Hospital Computer Network Discussion Group and Data Base

The following message is being FAXed to the addresses listed
at the end of this message. I am trying to locate experts on
the disease AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS (ALS) so I can ask
them for assistance. Please let me know about other ALS experts
    that I should contact.

    Many thanks, Bob Broedel, Tallahassee.
    -----------------------------------
START OF MESSAGE THAT IS BEING FAXED.

Recently my best friend was diagnosed by a local neurologist as
having ALS. And we are now in the process of getting a second
opinion from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

My understanding of the situation is that one goes down kind of a
"checklist", eliminating such causes as heavy metal intoxication,
adult spinal muscular atrophies, endocrine abnormalities, myelopathy,
motor neuropathies associated with gammopathy, hexosaminidase A
deficiency, diabetic amyotrophy, multifocal motor neuropathy,
neurologic complications of Lyme disease, organophosphate insecticide
intoxication, stroke, cervical spondylitic radiculpathy, lymphoma, etc.
until one is left with ALS as the only remaining possibility.

It is also my understanding that the "checklist" is dynamic, in that
it "grows" almost daily, containing additional possibilities (some of
them treatable) as practitioners and researchers learn more about
    motor neuron diseases.

I would also assume that only a very select working group of ALS
experts would have the most complete and up-to-date versions of such
a "checklist", and that it would not be available merely by looking
at a (dated) textbook or maybe even via a database search of articles.

With that in mind, I am desperately seeking contact with ALS experts
with hopes that you will mail or send by FAX the latest version of
your "checklist" to our consulting neurologist, as follows:

    Dr. Sylvana Riggio
    Department of Neurology
    MAYO CLINIC JACKSONVILLE
    4500 San Pablo Road
    Jacksonville FL 32224 USA
    TEL +1-904-223-7087
    FAX +1-904-223-2898

Please help with this urgent (before 12 October, please) request
    if at all possible.

I, and my friend Carmen Avila, will very much appreciate any
help that you can offer. If there is ever anything that I can do
to repay the favor, please let me know what I can do for you.

Most sincerely, and with hope, Bob Broedel
