The Center for Locomotion Studies at The Pennsylvania State University
(CELOS) is inviting applications for immediate openings for one postdoctoral
research assistant and two graduate assistantships. CELOS is an
interdisciplinary research center in the College of Health and Human
Development at Penn State. Current research projects include studies of
normal and pathologic lower extremity biomechanics, stress fractures, the
foot and ankle in diabetes, finite element analysis of the foot, exercise
interventions to build bone mass and combat bone loss, stair descent by the
elderly, lower extremity trauma, and studies on the International Space
Station. Graduate students may register for degrees in Kinesiology,
Bioengineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The faculty of CELOS includes
dedicated faculty members Drs. Peter Cavanagh, Neil Sharkey, Stephen Piazza,
and Jan Ulbrecht, as well as ten faculty affiliates. More information about

Graduate Assistantships
Applications are encouraged from quality students with baccalaureate and
masters degrees in the Life Sciences or Engineering. Students and graduates
with a background in Kinesiology, Physiology, Biology, Mechanical
Engineering, Bioengineering, and Computer Science are encouraged to apply.
The assistantships will pay a stipend and provide full tuition support.
Dissertation projects are expected to be developed in conjunction one of
several ongoing CELOS studies involving the biomechanics of lower extremity
movement and function.
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
This position will support a grant awarded from the National Institutes of
Health entitled "Design Criteria for Therapeutic Footwear in Diabetes." The
goal of this research is to develop a quantitative approach to the
prescription of therapeutic footwear through the development of a
three-dimensional finite element model of the foot and varied footwear.
Applications are encouraged from individuals with strong backgrounds in 3-D
finite element modeling, biomechanics, bioengineering, and anatomy. The
successful candidate will be appointed on an annual basis at a rate
commensurate with other federally-funded postdoctoral appointees. See:

Preferential consideration will be given to applicants expressing employment
