  • Upper torso modeling

    Dear subscribers,

Recently I posted a query regarding measuring the upper limbs of the human
body using an Ascension Flock of Birds for the purpose of recording human
motion. I was seeking information regarding the estimation of the centre's
of rotation of the upper limbs. Below is my original posting and all
responses. Thank you to all that replied, the information given has been
    extremely beneficial.

    ORIGINAL POSTING:

I am seeking information on modeling the upper limbs of the human body. I
have an Ascension Flock of Birds and wish to use it to record human motion.
I am having difficulty in accurately determining the location of joint
centres and the axis of rotation. Specifically, I am looking at the cervical
spine, the shoulder, the elbow and the wrist.
I have ample literature on how these joints work, the rotation axis and how
these axis were determined. I cannot however find information on relating
these joint centres to known anatomical locations. Is there some standard
that is used in biomechanics laboratories for linking motion capture data to
specific joint angles? For instance, measure known anatomical locations
which will estimate the joint centres, use this data as offsets to the
sensor locations and then you have the joint centres in relation to the
sensor. With this information, the joint angles can be determined from the
sensor data (I hope!). Or another example: measure anatomical locations on
the shoulder complex and elbow and determine the long axis of the humerus -
    can this be done?

I'm not sure if I'm asking a very simple question here, but any information
    will be appreciated.

    Thanks
