PhD studentship
'The Role of Soft Tissue Imbalance in the Progression of Scoliotic
Deformity'
A PhD studentship, funded for three years by Materials Ireland, is currently
available for the above project, resulting from collaboration between the
Bioengineering Research Group and local Orthopaedic clinicians. A
competitive stipend is offered and will be commensurate with qualifications
and experience.
Project Outline:
The principal objective of this project is to develop a model of the spinal
column which will integrate the ligamentous tissues, intravertebral disc and
vertebral body components in order to evaluate their contribution to the
progression of scoliotic deformity.
Methodology:
The programme follows a multi-disciplinary approach with inputs from the
fields of biomaterials, biomechanics and orthopaedics. The project has three
key stages (i) quantification and characterisation of the collagenous
structures in the spinal motion segments, (ii) development of the model,
building from a simple vertebral body model, and (iii) model validation
through application to clinical case studies.
ELIGIBILITY - The position is available from the 1st October 2000.
Candidates with a 1st, 2.1, or an MSc degree in one of the following areas
should apply: Mechanical Engineering, Bio-engineering, Mathematical Physics
or a closely related subject. A demonstrated ability in the use of MatLab
and Image Analysis software and/or motion analysis techniques would be a
distinct advantage.
