Subject: Insurance Networks
Sender: Hospital Computer Network Discussion Group and Data Base
>From "Connections"2(2) Oct 1992, (Working Group on Hospital/Medical
Information Systems).
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (BCBSM) and Medica are
linking electronic claims submission networks as part of a 6-month
demonstration project in cooperation with the Workgroup for Electronic
Data Interchange (WEDI). The resulting single network will be used
by both physicians and hospitals in Minnesota for submitting claims
to BCBSM, Medica or commercial insurers.
According to WEDI, each electronic claim submission saves between
50 c. and $1.24. Its Minnesota project is intended to get more doctors
and hospitals to submit claims electronically, to increase the number
of electronic claims by 10% and to extend the capabilities of electronic
technologies to commercial insurers.
Medica is a managed care plan with about 540,000 members. BCBSM
covers about 1.7 million people. Both will offer electronic claims
submission software to providers (who may also use their existing
systems).
For more information: Maureen Ward, Manager, Twin Cities Demonstr-
ation Project, WEDI Chicago Office, (708)250-3240.
Two other projects are going on this fall: a similar one in Virginia,
and a single employer demonstration being conducted by AT&T.
