  • Tenure stream position in Bioenginering

The University of Pittsburgh, with support from The Whitaker Foundation,
has recently formed a new Department of Bioengineering within the School
of Engineering. This formalization is a result of many years of
productive research endeavors with our Medical Center. Currently our
very active educational program offers BS, MS, PhD, and MD/PhD degrees
and several certificate programs. Recent research and teaching additions
to the department include an endowment for the McGinnis Chair in
Bioengineering and the development of a Biomedical Device Rapid
Prototyping Facility funded by the Keck Foundation. In addition, the
Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative (PTEI) supports regional Tissue
Engineering research and educational activities through a seed grant,
summer internship, and related activities. Information about our
faculty, educational and research programs can be found at
    http://www.engrng.pitt.edu/~wwwbiotc/.

We are seeking an individual to enhance our core departmental faculty.
Expertise areas of particular interest include:

1 –Cell, Tissue, and Organ Biomechanics. Areas of interest encompass a
broad range of biomechanical disciplines. Although all areas of
biomechanics are of interest, particular emphasis will be placed on
those individuals with an interest in cell mechanics. This individual
can link with the extensive cardiovascular and orthopedic biomechanics
activities already ongoing both within Bioengineering and in Vascular
    and Orthopedic surgery.

2 – Biomaterials/applied cell biology. Areas of interest include, but
are not limited to, biomaterial synthesis and characterization,
    cell-matrix interactions, cell-biomaterial interactions,
mechanotransduction, and related biotechnological fields. This
individual can link with the extensive research facilities at the
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the McGowan Center for
    Artificial Organ Development.

This is a tenure stream appointment and will be made at a level
commensurate with the qualifications of the candidate, i.e., at the
assistant, associate, or full professorial level. While the search will
continue until the position is filled, a starting date of no later than
fall 2001 is preferred. A complete dossier should be sent to:
