    Dear Colleagues,
The news of Herman's death has hit us all very hard. As with Rick, I have
felt fortunate to count Herman as a colleague and friend. I was faced with
losing calibration data for all of my in vivo intracortical pin study data
which was my doctoral research. Through his visit and our subsequent com-
munication through email over the course of a year, we were able to recon-
struct the data. For this and all that he taught me, I have been grateful.
Herman was certainly a character, whose personality came through all of those
email messages we have come accustomed to receiving. Even those who have
never met him have come to know him through Biomech-l. His engaging conver-
sations at meetings and his characteristic 'fast-talking' will sorely be
missed by all. His contributions to the field of biomechanics have been great-
his ideas have stimulated countless discussions both on and off email. We will
all feel the loss of a great colleague and friend for a long time.
    With Regards,
    Irene McClay, PhD, PT
