SUNY, College at Brockport is located in the village of Brockport in the
western part of New York State. Brockport is about 15 miles west of
Rochester and 60 miles east of Buffalo. The village is home to
approximately 9,800 residents and sits on the banks of the historic Erie
Canal. The College is adjacent to the village and campus is within easy
walking distance of the shops, churches, restaurants, and cinemas that
line Main Street.
The College at Brockport is a comprehensive college that has “student
success” as the cornerstone of its mission. Over 6,500 FTE
undergraduate students and approximately 1,800 FTE graduate students are
enrolled at Brockport. The College offers undergraduate majors in 38
different disciplines and Master’s programs in 16 academic areas
(including a large Master of Science in Education program).
The Department of Physical Education and Sport is the largest department
on campus. Approximately 700 undergraduate students major in physical
education and over 100 graduate students (mostly part-timers) are
pursuing graduate degrees. Twenty-nine full-time faculty and
professional staff teach classes in the department. Eleven of those
individuals have joint responsibilities with either athletics or campus
recreation. Currently, 15 of the 18 tenure-track faculty assigned
strictly to physical education hold doctoral degrees (and the other
three are ABD).
The aim of the undergraduate academic major is to produce graduates who
are “physically educated.” As such, the core of the major is focused on
the study of motor skill and physical fitness. Students learn the
principles for acquiring skill and fitness, seek to improve their own
levels of skill and fitness, and learn to appreciate the contributions
of skill and fitness to human development. In addition to the major,
most students also pursue one or more professional concentrations.
Professional concentrations include teacher education (with an option in
adapted physical education), exercise physiology, athletic training, and
sport management. At the graduate level, curricular options include
pedagogy, adapted physical education, and athletic administration.
