  • Re: public domain PDF tools (correction)

Actually, to further clarify the subject, the full Adobe Acrobat package
(Acrobat Exchange) is able to add several security settings to any pdf. When
saving a pdf from within Exchange you can allow or disallow opening,
printing, copying text and graphics to the clipboard and changing the
contents of the document. These settings are controlled by associating
password(s) with the pdf when being saved.

Our lab policy is to allow opening and printing, but disallow changing or
cutting and pasting the contents for all documents made available to the
public. We are trying to address the problem of words and pictures being
"lifted" out of our documents and placed in other contexts, such as
    PowerPoint presentations.

It is unclear to me if the pdf authoring packages mentioned by Mel are also
capable of applying these security features to documents that they generate.
We find the security features a must have when publishing anything on the
Internet and I imagine that other researchers might feel the same way about
their work being used out of context.
