We have a PhD studentship (the Sir Charles Wright Scholarship)
available for a project to develop improved methods of fatigue testing
stainless steel orthopaedic and dental implants. The project will
study the effects of environment, loading frequency and variable
amplitude loading on the initiation and growth of fatigue cracks, and
develop improved loading procedures and test methods with
particular emphasis on spine implants, fracture fixation and dental
devices. These methods will then be verified by a programme of
comparative testing of actual components.
The studentship is funded at the basic EPSRC rate (approximately
£7k per year plus fees), but additional funding is currently under
negotiation and the project will be carried out in association with a
well known orthopaedic company. In addition, there will be other
opportunities for additional income through demonstrating, teaching
and consultancy work.
The Medical Engineering group at Cardiff University has strong
research interests in orthopaedic biomechanics, implant design and
testing, with a fully equipped motion analysis laboratory and an
extensive range of equipment for materials testing and
characterisation.
