Post-doctoral Fellowship

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship in the area of
intervertebral disc bioengineering. The general aims of the research are to
investigate the influence of mechanical signals on the metabolic response
of intervertebral disc cells in order to isolate those factors that
accelerate degenerative disc disease and cause low back pain. Specific
projects include investigations of the mechano-biology of the
intervertebral disc with animal and cell/tissue culture models, and/or the
development of finite element models of the intervertebral disc and its
cellular environment.
The fellow is expected to spend research time at the base institution in
the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Vermont, and
also at the AO Research Institute in Davos, Switzerland.
The University of Vermont has extensive biomedical engineering resources in
the areas of biomechanics, histology, and microscopy. Opportunities also
exist for collaborations in the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation
within the McClure Musculoskeletal Research Center in the College of
Medicine. The AO Research Institute also has excellent facilities in cell
and tissue culture, cell and molecular biology, imaging, and biomechanics.
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in bioengineering or a related field and
have a strong interest in soft-tissue mechanics, biomechanics, and/or
tissue engineering. Experience with materials testing, computational
modeling, molecular biology, animal models and/or tissue culture is preferred.
