Graduate Research Assistantships in Ergonomics Available

The Ergonomics Laboratory in The Department of Industrial Engineering at
North Carolina State University has openings for up to seven graduate
research assistants for the Fall of 2001. These positions are intended for
students pursuing either a Master's or PhD, with interests in one or more
of the following areas: biomechanics, ergonomics, human factors,
occupational safety. Funding for these positions comes from both industry
and government sources and includes both laboratory and industry-based
research, as well as our recently funded NIOSH Training Grant in Safety and
    Ergonomics.

Research assistantships are 9 - 12 month appointments that cover tuition
and health insurance, and provide a monthly stipend of $1,000 - $1,300 per
    month.

    Current research projects include:
Low back injury prevention in the construction industry
    Ergonomics and product design
Ergonomic interventions the furniture manufacturing industry
    Ergonomics of computer-based work
Modeling of trunk kinematics during lifting
EMG-based evaluation of low back performance
Effects of fatiguing overhead work on shoulder biomechanics / injury
Interaction between cognitive tasks and physical tasks
Effects of trait characteristics on human performance

The Department of Industrial Engineering has a strong reputation in four
areas in industrial engineering: ergonomics, systems analysis and
optimization (operations research), production, and manufacturing. It is
generally ranked in the top ten industrial engineering departments in the
    United States.
