Position for a Postdoctoral Fellow
at the Pennsylvania State University, Department of Kinesiology
Project Supervisor: Dagmar Sternad
We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our
studies on motor control. Our interdisciplinary research program is
devoted to studying the generation of perceptually controlled
behavior in biological and artificial systems. Its focus is to
understand intralimb coordination in multi-joint movements, such as
in drawing, or functional perceptuo-motor tasks such as ball
interception. The theoretical framework for the research is nonlinear
dynamics with a goal to model complex behavior in 3D. Complementing
the behavioral and theoretical work are fMRI studies that examine the
brain processes involved in simple and complex movements. The
postdoctoral fellow should have expertise in at least one of the
following fields: nonlinear dynamics, modeling, biomechanics,
analysis of fMRI data. Experience with computers and programming
(C++, Matlab) is expected.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or expect to receive one before
September 2001) in Kinesiology, Experimental Psychology,
Neuroscience, or Physical and Engineering Sciences, with an academic
record of scientific excellence, independent research, and a strong
interest in an interdisciplinary approach to motor control. The
applicant is expected to get involved in existing research projects
but is also encouraged to bring to bear his/her expertise into the
research project.
The Department of Kinesiology at the Pennsylvania State University
has a strong focus on motor control and biomechanics with many
faculty members working on related issues. This provides a
stimulating environment for collaborations and interdisciplinary
research. The project also has an established collaboration with
Stefan Schaal in Computer Science and Neuroscience at the University
of Southern California, where the research focus is on motor control
theories with humanoid robots.
