Griffith University, Gold Coast, seeks applications from
well-qualified Australasian persons for a PhD
scholarship to investigate the perceptual and
biomechanical constraints on driving performance.
Funding will be provided for up to 3 years (A$23k pa) of
full-time PhD study.
rightThe applicant must be an Australian or New Zealand
citizen or an Australasian permanent resident.
rightThe applicant should have either an Honours 1 or 2A
undergraduate degree, or have considerable experience
in a relevant area. The project is funded by an
Australian Research Council SPIRT (Strategic
Partnerships in Industry - Research and Training) grant
and is in collaboration with the Holden Performance
Driving Centre (HPDC), Norwell, QLD. Using
biomechanical and dynamical systems techniques, the
research investigates how perception and action are
tightly coupled during the complex task of automobile
driving, and how drivers can learn to drive more safely
and effectively. Experiments will be undertaken at
HPDC's driver-training track in a Holden Commodore
vehicle that has been already instrumented to collect
relevant driver control variables. Of particular interest
will be issues related to the relation between postural
stability, optical information, and control. The issue of
attention will also be addressed in experiments that
investigate the effect that speaking on a mobile phone
has on control of driving.
rightThe successful PhD candidate should have knowledge
and a keen interest in issues of perceptual-motor
coordination and skill. Knowledge of biomechanics and
techniques of instrumentation for the collection of
behavioural data will also be useful. The project is
under the supervision of Dr Paul Treffner (motor
coordination & control) and Mr Rod Barrett
(biomechanics). The candidate will be required to enroll
as soon as possible in a full-time PhD at Griffith
University in the School of Physiotherapy & Exercise
Science. The successful applicant will have reasonable
travel and relocation expenses reimbursed and will be
provided with a vacation allowance.
