  • Position at One Small Step Gait Laboratory, Guy's Hospital London

    The job
This is a two-year post offered at the Senior I, on Physiotherapist Scale
(£25,388 - £29,483). There will be a mix of clinical (40%) and research
(60%) duties, with the successful applicant expected to be involved in a
number of projects but taking responsibility for the one detailed below.
Clinical duties include conducting data collection and processing and report
drafting. We believe the post is an excellent opportunity for a
physiotherapist with a demonstrable interest in research to develop a
    profile in biomechanics.

    The project
One of our principal concerns is the lack of correlation between variables
in the clinical examination (static variables) and those in walking (dynamic
variables). We wish to investigate whether the clinical examination may be
improved by the introduction of electromyography and imaging techniques.
Specifically, we wish to use electromyographic techniques to estimate the
force-length-activity relationships of muscles in passive movements and
assess neurological elements of the examination. We will use imaging
techniques to measure bony and soft tissue dimensions and correlate these
with measured joint ranges and estimates of bony torsion.
The successful candidate will expected to make measurements on normal
children and children with cerebral palsy in the laboratory and under
    general anaesthesia.

Guy’s Hospital is one of the most respected teaching hospitals in London,
founded in 1725 by the businessman Thomas Guy, as a hospital for incurables,
caring for those patients discharged from the nearby St. Thomas’ hospital.
The two hospitals have maintained their close historical links with the
formation of a joint medical school in 1982 and a single hospital Trust in
1993. In 1998, the medical schools of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ joined with King
’s College medical school to form the GKT medical school. Guy’s benefited
from the merger with new buildings and excellent information facilities. Guy
’s is situated on a single site in central London, 3 minutes walk from
    London Bridge railway station.
The Newcomen centre, Guy’s Hospital, has been a specialist unit treating
children with cerebral palsy for many years. With the opening of The One
Small Step Gait & Movement Laboratory in 1998, Guy’s hospital was able to
offer a more comprehensive service to the children of south-east London, and
the south east corner of England. The laboratory’s main purpose is to
develop and use tools for the objective assessment of gait problems in
children, particularly those with cerebral palsy. We are proud of our output
but our looking to develop our clinical service further through a funded
programme of highly-focussed Research and Development.
