CALL FOR PAPERS
Fourth International Symposium on Safety in Ice Hockey
May 5-6, 2002
Pittsburgh, PA
Papers are invited for the Fourth International Symposium on Safety in Ice
Hockey, sponsored by ASTM Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities
and its Subcommittee F08.51 on Medical Aspects and Biomechanics, in
cooperation with the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) and USA
Hockey. The symposium will be held Sunday and Monday, May 5-6, 2002 in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in conjunction with the May 7-10, 2002 standards
development meetings of Committee F08.
This symposium is the fourth in a series, the first being held in 1987 in
Montreal, the second in 1992 in Pittsburgh, and the third in 1997 in St.
Louis. The objective of the symposium is to review the current state of the
art and science of prevention of ice hockey injuries. One session will be
devoted to in-line or roller hockey injuries.
Papers are invited on, but are not limited to the following topics:
· New and old protective equipment
· Coaching techniques to decrease the risk of injuries
· Playing rule changes to decrease the risk of injuries
· Awareness programs for players, parents, coaches, referees, and
administrators
Papers on these subjects are invited from the fields of sports science,
sports medicine, athletic training, biomechanics, risk factor management,
epidemiology, sports psychology, injury surveillance, sports equipment
standards, physical conditioning, behavioral factors in sports, and also
from individuals associated with national sports governing bodies, playing
facilities, officiating, and playing rules.
In order to participate in the symposium, all prospective
authors/presenters must submit a title, a 250-300 word preliminary abstract,
and the ASTM Paper Submittal Form below by July 27, 2001. The abstract must
include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work
discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details
regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a
commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Because a
limited number of abstracts will be accepted, be sure that the abstract is
complete to allow for careful assessment of the paper's suitability for this
symposium. If the preliminary abstract is accepted, the author/presenter
will be requested to submit a final camera-ready abstract several months
before the symposium. The final abstracts will be distributed in an
abstract booklet at the symposium.
Submit the abstract and the form below to Dorothy A. Fitzpatrick, Symposia
Operations, ASTM, 100 Barr Harbor Drive, PO Box C700, West Conshohocken, PA
19428-2959, USA, Tel: 610/832-9677. Do not send abstracts by fax or e-mail.
Additional Paper Submittal Forms are available from Ms. Fitzpatrick. The
symposium co-chairmen, Alan B. Ashare, M.D., and David Pearsall, Ph.D., will
notify you by September 27, 2001 of your paper's acceptability for
presentation at the symposium.
While a Special Technical Publication (STP) based on this symposium is
anticipated, the ASTM Committee on Publications (COP) will consider the
final selection of abstracts for approval as a book. After the COP approves
the publication of an STP, the ASTM staff will send you manuscript
guidelines. All accepted manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP will
be due at ASTM by March 6, 2002. This date will be strictly enforced.
Papers not received by the due date will not be published in the STP but may
be forwarded to an appropriate ASTM journal for consideration by the journal
editor. All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase
reprints of their papers at a nominal cost.
