Research Assistant
Long term vibration dose for vehicle operators
Department of Human Sciences
Commencing salary up to £19,486 per annum
Long term exposure to vibration and mechanical shocks might lead to
increased risk of back pain. In an attempt to reduce the risk, proposed EU
legislation will limit occupational exposures to vibration for many
industrial sectors. This 18 month project, funded by the Health and Safety
Executive, will assess the physical environments (vibration and mechanical
shocks) experienced by vehicle drivers over full working days using current
and proposed techniques of predicting health risk.
It is envisaged that the post will appeal to people with a background in the
human sciences, ergonomics or engineering. The successful candidate will
have good IT, written and inter-personal skills, with an ability to
collaborate with industrial contacts. Applicants should have a 2:1 or
masters degree in a relevant discipline, be well organised and with
experience of using MS Office and statistics software. The successful
candidate will have the opportunity to register for a part-time PhD.
Knowledge in the following areas would be advantageous but is not essential:
digital signal processing, LabVIEW, human response to vibration, human
physiology, human biology, ergonomics, health and safety and biomechanics.
Informal discussions and enquiries are welcome: please contact Dr Neil
Mansfield ( n.j.mansfield@lboro.ac.uk). For further information, and an
application form, contact Mrs. M. Hewitt, Department of Human Sciences,
