POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Assistant Professor in Rehabilitation and Children's Health
POSITION: A tenure-track position in Rehabilitation and Children's
Health at the Assistant Professor level in the Faculty of Rehabilitation
Medicine, University of Alberta, with a joint appointment at the Alberta
Children's Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. The position will be located
primarily in Calgary with a presence at the University of Alberta by
travel and telecommunications.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Applications will have an entry level degree in Occupational Therapy,
Physical Therapy or Speech Language Pathology and a PhD (or equivalent)
in rehabilitation or related fields.
* An established or emerging program of research in rehabilitation
related to children.
CONTEXT:
* The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta
includes 34 academic staff members and offers two undergraduate degrees
(BSc-OT & BSc-PT) and four degrees at the graduate level; MSLP, MSc(OT),
MSc(PT), MSc(SLP) and an interdisciplinary PhD degree in rehabilitation
science. Most faculty are affiliated with one of three departments,
Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT), or Speech Pathology
and Audiology (SPA). Some faculty, with expertise in assistive
technology, epidemiology and biostatistics, neuroscience or degenerative
spinal disorders, have Faculty appointments that are not associated with
a specific department.
Established in 1997, the Applied Developmental Neuroscience Group
provides a leadership role within the faculty in the systematic
evaluation of intervention strategies used in the rehabilitation of
children with developmental disabilities. It does this by encouraging
clinicians to adopt theoretical frameworks to justify and evaluate their
intervention strategies and by providing collaboration opportunities
among researchers, clinicians and caregivers. The primary goal of the
research group is to link theory, practice and evaluation to validate
rehabilitation management strategies with this population. Members of
the group are from the departments of Physical Therapy, Speech Pathology
and Audiology, and Occupational Therapy. Additional affiliations
developmental paediatrics at the Glenrose Hospital and other research
groups at the University of Alberta and in other academic and research
settings across Canada and internationally. Current work includes
evaluation of the longitudinal relationship among fine motor, gross
motor and communication domains in typically developing children from 9
to 23 months of age and in young children with a diagnosis of mild
cerebral palsy and establishment of provincial and national information
networks for families of children with developmental disabilities.
* The Alberta Children's Hospital is a unique healthcare facility
servicing both an inpatient and ambulatory care population. It is
devoted to primary, secondary and tertiary service for children and
their families and is actively involved in research and education. The
facility is part of a developing Child health Network in southern
Alberta and is the primary centre for paediatric care in southern
Alberta, southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern British Columbia.
It houses 115 beds, 1,682 employees, 35 specialty ambulatory clinics,
mental health services and a rehabilitation and education centre.
In 2005, the Calgary Health Region expects to open a new Alberta
Children's Hospital. A few of the highlights are improved and expanded
emergency and operating facilities; better support programs for parents;
integration with primary care in the community and strengthened
education and research.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The position carries expectations for teaching,
research and service that are common to all tenure-track positions at
the University of Alberta.
* Research expectations include leadership in investigation of
children's health issues in the Faculty and at the Hospital, mentoring
of clinicians in their research efforts, acquisition of external funding
to support research in both venues, and coordination of the
implementation of funded and un-funded research projects.
* Teaching expectations include involvement in and/or responsibility for
coursework on the web or on campus for undergraduate and graduate levels
and graduate student supervision in family, child and adolescent health.
* Service expectations include assumption of some committee work as
appropriate at the University and Hospital sites.
