!!!!!!! Dear Biomechs, we need your help !!!!!!!!!
The BioMechanics Laboratory of the Benjamin Franklin Medical Center
(Free University of Berlin) has mainly been involved in the in vivo
measurement with instrumented orthopaedic implants for hip joint,
shoulder joint and spine for a long time.
May be you know our research work from papers, our CD-ROM "HIP98" or
our web site http://www.biomechanik.de
!!!!!! Now, the continuation of our work is in danger !!!!!!!
Berlin's SPD-PDS coalition government wants to close the Free
University's medical faculty and strip the Benjamin Franklin
Medical Center of its university status!
In the coalition talks between the German Social Democrats (SPD) and
the German Socialist Party (PDS) in December 2001, it was agreed to
close the medical faculty of the Free University (FU) of Berlin and
transform the Benjamin Franklin Medical Center into a general
hospital.
!!!!!!! Please help us by sending an e-mail to those
responsible for these plans to make public your protest !!!!!!!

------- M a i l t e x t -------------------------------------
VETO the coalition agreement on university medicine!!!
Because it would
- penalize excellence in the sciences
- mean the dismantling of western Berlin
- signal a schism in German-American friendship
- mean a devastating loss of trust in Berlin's science and education
policy
- annihilate jobs at the largest employer in southwest Berlin
- destroy one of Berlin's brightest prospects for the future
- yield only little short-term savings for university medicine
It was the SPD and the PDS who had continually stressed that the
city could not solve its financial problems at the expense of
education, science, and culture -- these are the guarantors of
Berlin's growth potential.
The closure of a medical school, the Benjamin Franklin Medical
Center, would
- strike an irreparable blow to Berlin's standing in the sciences
and
- hence to our growth capabilities
- result in a devastating loss of trust among decision-making
bodies in Germany and abroad
- prolong the debate on the role of the capital city ad absurdum
- mean a wholesale loss of jobs at the largest employer in
southwest Berlin
- have a crippling impact on the biosciences as "job machine"
- hurt the proposed unification between Brandenburg (which has no
faculty of medicine) and Berlin
- be yet another instance of the dismantling of western Berlin and
the Free University and would signal a break in German- American
friendship
- and, to crown it all, in no way lead to savings. The Benjamin
Franklin Medical Center -- as well as the Charité - - is among the
most efficient university hospitals in the Federal Republic of
Germany. The assertion that university medicine in Berlin is
comparatively expensive is patently false. On the contrary: Berlin's
university medicine attracts considerable funds to the city. The
proposed closure of the Benjamin Franklin Medical Center would
penalize performance.
Defend university medicine!
Distance yourself from a decision that is sure to do great damage
not only to university medicine, but also to the governing parties
at the next election!
You will find this and more on the protest page:
http://www.medizin.fu-berlin.de/prot_e/
it keeps you informed of these political plans and their
consequences.
Thanks a lot
