    UNIVERSITY OF BERN
MAURICE E. MUELLER INSTITUTE FOR BIOMECHANICS
    ORTHOPAEDIC BIOMECHANICS DIVISION

The Orthopaedic Biomechanics Division of the Maurice E. Mueller Institute
for Biomechanics at the University of Bern is searching for qualified
applicants to head the Basic and Clinical Biomechanics (BCB) Group.

The staff of the BCB Group currently consists of six full-time researchers.
It also includes visiting scientists and undergraduate students from local
engineering and medical schools. The group collaborates with the surgical
staff of the Department of Orthopaedics at the Inselspital in Bern.

The major areas of focus of the BCB Group are state of the art spinal
implant evaluations, spinal injury mechanisms and pathology, new
technologies for osteosynthesis and treatment strategies in the elderly
spine. Research methodologies involve primarily in vivo and in vitro
experimental work, using human and animal models, as well as mathematical
    (FEA) models.

Candidates should have an earned doctorate in bioengineering, engineering,
or a related field, with a demonstrated competence in publication and the
generation of external funding. Requirements include an expertise in
clinical biomechanics, including mathematical, i.e. analytical and
approximation methods (FEA) as well as in vitro and in vivo experimental
protocols. Experience in spine biomechanics, in particular related to
implant design/evaluation, tissue mechanics and surgical techniques is
    highly desired.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop a strong externally
funded research program in the appropriate discipline and to participate in
various interdisciplinary research activities. Knowledge of the German
language is not required, but would be advantageous.

Position start date: May 1, 2002 (negotiable). Applications will be
accepted until position is filled. Salary is commensurate with
    qualifications and experience.
