We are particuarly interested in applicants with a biomechanics background
for the following academic position.
HUMAN BIOLOGIST POSITION
A tenure-track position is available at the Assistant or Associate
Professor level for a Human Biologist. A Ph.D. is required.
The Department of Biology contains 23 regular faculty, all but one a
doctorate. The Department serves about 450 undergraduate majors in three
major areas of interest: pre-professional studies, ecology/evolutionary
biology, and general biology. About 1,300 students per year take the
department's Biology for General Education course, and we offer several
large service courses for health science students. About 20 students are
currently enrolled in the department's MS program.
The department's faculty are dedicated to quality teaching. Teaching
responsibilities will include a two-semester course in human anatomy and
physiology, a course in pathophysiology, pharmacology, or histology, and
possibly another course in the candidate's area of interest. We are
particularly interested in applicants with expertise in biomechanics,
mammalian physiology, pathology, pharmacology or toxicology. Most of our
faculty are actively engaged in research, and the candidate is expected to
maintain an active research program involving BS and MS students. Funding
sources of current faculty have included NSF, NIH, American Heart
Association, National Park Service, USDA, EPA, and various state and local
agencies.
The Department of Biology is housed in Lewis Science Center, which contains
over 100,000 sq-ft, including about 40,000 sq-ft that was recently
renovated with NSF and university support to provide additional teaching
and research space. Numerous federal grants have contributed to improving
our equipment base for teaching and research. We recently completed a
$50,000 renovation of our animal room facility, obtained a new Scanning
Electron Microscope, and built a $120,000 lab for our new Experimental
Neurobiology course. Proposals are pending for a confocal microscope, and
for additional computers and instrumentation to further enrich teaching
labs. Every office and most labs have ethernet and optical fiber access to
mainframe, library, internet, www, etc. Multiple computer stations are
employed in numerous courses.
Conway is a prosperous city of 45,000 with two small private colleges in
addition to The University of Central Arkansas. Living here means easy
access to both a large urban center (Little Rock is 30 minutes away) and
pristine wild areas such as the Buffalo National River, and the Ozark and
Ouachita Mountains. Collaborations exist with staff at nearby institutions,
including the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the National
Center for Toxicological Research. The area affords opportunities for
canoeing, fishing, and hunting, and is also rich in art, handicraft, and
folk culture. For further information on the department, university, and
area, visit our website: http://www.uca.edu/divisions/academic/biology/
Our department strives to maintain the kind of rich collegial environment
where students at all levels feel comfortable and welcome to explore freely
through the various subdisciplines of modern biology. Collaboration and
cooperation are the rule, and a supportive departmental atmosphere is the
result. If you wish to join us, please submit your curriculum vita,
statements of teaching philosophy and research plans, and the names of
three references to: Dr. Paul Hamilton, Department of Biology, University
of Central Arkansas, Conway, AR 72035. Application review will begin March
12th. (Email: paulh@mail.uca.edu) UCA is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative
Action Employer.
