ORTHOPAEDIC BIOMECHANICS DIVISION
The Orthopaedic Biomechanics Division of the Maurice E. Müller
Institute for Biomechanics at the University of Bern is searching for
qualified applicants to head a Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS) Group.
The staff of the CAS Group currently consists of three full-time
researchers. It also includes visiting scientists and undergraduate
students from engineering and medical schools. The group collaborates with
the orthopaedic departments of several European clinics as well as with the
software development team of Medivision, a manufacturer of computer
assisted orthopaedic surgery systems.
The major areas of focus of the CAS Group are in research,
development, and clinical application of algorithms, methods, and modules
related to computer assisted surgery, involving aspects of operation
planning, simulation, and intraoperative navigation.
Candidates should have an earned doctorate in computer science,
engineering, or a related field, with a demonstrated competence in
publication and the generation of external funding. Requirements include an
expertise in software design and development using C/C++. Experiences in
the interdisciplinary field between medicine and engineering, in particular
in CAS or related areas are highly desired.
The successful applicant will be expected to supervise Ph.D. and M.S.
students, to participate in various interdisciplinary research activities,
and to initiate new research projects through external funding. Knowledge
of the German language is not required, but would be advantageous.
Position start date: June 1, 2002 (negotiable). Applications will be
accepted until the position is filled. Salary is commensurate with
qualifications and experience.
