Title: BIOMECHANICS RESEARCH ASSISTANT (2 positions
available)
Location: Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences
Centre, Toronto, Canada
Date: April 9, 2002
Description:
We are seeking two enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals with a
strong practical background in Biomechanics or Biomechanical
Engineering, to work as research assistants in a balance, gait and
motor control laboratory. The successful candidates will join a
multi-disciplinary research team headquartered at the Centre for
Studies in Aging (CSiA), Sunnybrook and Women's College Health
Sciences Centre. Sunnybrook & Women's is a major teaching
hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. The research
team is currently led by six senior scientists: three bioengineers
(Drs. Brian Maki, Geoff Fernie and Milos Popovic), a neuroscientist
(Dr. William McIlroy) and two clinicians (Drs. Barbara Liu and Rory
Fisher). The research program is supported by a major team grant
from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, as well as
operating grants and other funds held by the individual scientists.
The research program is aimed primarily at understanding effects of
aging on the control of balance and movement, and developing new
approaches to prevent falls and promote safe mobility in older
adults. Within these areas, there is a wide range of projects,
encompassing fundamental studies of biomechanics and motor
control, applied research and development of assistive
technologies, and clinical falls prevention programs. A major
strength of the program is the combination of basic science,
clinical research and product design and development. The team
includes a strong emphasis on using artificial intelligence to
compensate for age-related attentional and cognitive deficits, i.e.
development of "smart" assistive devices and building
environments. Research facilities include a unique large-scale
multi-axis moving platform system for evoking postural reactions,
and associated instrumentation (motion-analysis systems, force
plates, EMG, eye tracker, etc). Development facilities include
design workstations, electronics and machine shops, and
laboratories for testing of prototypes.
For more information about our research, please see our web site:
www.sunnybrook.utoronto.ca:8080/~csia/CSiAInfo
Responsibilities:
The Research Assistants will be responsible for recruiting and
screening volunteers for experiments, running experiments and
performing the associated data collection (force plate, EMG,
kinematics), and managing and analyzing the data. Training,
supervising and assisting other research personnel, graduate
students and clinical personnel in using the equipment and running
experiments is also an important component of the job. Additional
duties include management of laboratory equipment and supplies,
performing literature searches and maintaining a literature
database, and conducting tours of the research center and making
presentations on behalf of the team. There may also be
opportunities for participating in developing new instrumentation
and assistive technologies, and writing computer programs for data
collection/processing and for modeling and simulation purposes.
There are two positions available. In addition to the above, the more
senior position involves: coordinating the networking and research
activities of the research team; organizing and moderating
consumer and clinician workshops and focus groups; coordinating
dissemination of research results to the media and to scientific,
clinical and lay audiences; making presentations on behalf of the
team; and organizing tours, visits, journal club meetings and
seminars.
Qualifications:
BSc or MSc in biomechanics, bioengineering, kinesiology,
rehabilitation science or a related field. Applicants must have
training in biomechanics of human movement, experience in
performing biomechanical or motor control experiments with human
subjects, and experience in using force plates, EMG and motion
analysis systems. Computer programming skills and
electronic/mechanical design and fabrication skills are not
essential but would be regarded as an asset. The more senior
position requires strong interpersonal, communication and
organizational skills, as well as a higher level of training and
experience.
Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre hires
on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. All
qualified persons are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian
citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
Starting salary will range from $23,000 to $45,500 per year
(Canadian funds) depending on education and experience. A full
benefits package is provided. The position is available
immediately, although the starting date is negotiable to some
extent. We will accept applications until both positions are filled.
Application:
To apply, please email or FAX a covering letter, your resume or
curriculum vitae, a detailed summary of your experience in
performing biomechanical measurements (maximum one page),
and a copy of your university transcripts to: Brian Maki, PhD, PEng
Professor (University of Toronto), Senior Scientist (Sunnybrook &
Women's College Health Sciences Centre)
Centre for Studies in Aging

FAX: 416-480-5856
Please be sure to indicate your citizenship and when you would be
available to start. Only complete applications will be considered.
After an initial screening, selected applicants will be asked to
forward three academic and/or professional letters of reference.
