  • Re: Bionet controversial topic #6: on the obligation to shareuseful research data

    Dear List Members,

I thought I would add to the discussion some of the considerations we have
had in our development of the AnyBody modeling system. This is a computer
system for very detailed multibody biomechanical analysis. You can read all
    about it at
    http://anybody.auc.dk.

In our work with this system, we have found that the development of reliable
body models is at least as big a task as the development of the system
itself. If you have a body model with hundreds of muscles and dozens of
bones and joints, then the body of anthropometrical data you have to sort
out and validate is enormous. We realized at an early time that we did not
have any chance of developing models covering all details of the human body
on our own, and neither would any other individual user. Thus, the only way
forward is to share data between users.

What we have tried to do is to develop a model description language that can
easily be exchanged on text files.
What we will do is to promote the sharing of data between the users of the
system, and we will set up some sort of web-based repository for models.

To us, data sharing is not a choice. It is a bare necessity, if we want to
unleash the potential of our technology.

    Thanks for listening,
    John
