Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre invites
applications for a New Investigator position in Intelligent Assistive
Technology. Candidates must be within the first five years of their
independent research careers. The position is available
immediately; however, the starting date is negotiable to some
extent.
The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research
team headquartered at Sunnybrook and Women's College Health
Sciences Centre. Sunnybrook & Women's is a major teaching
hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. The research
team is currently led by six Senior Scientists: three bioengineers
(Drs. Brian Maki, Geoff Fernie and Milos Popovic), a neuroscientist
(Dr. William McIlroy) and two clinical scientists (Drs. Barbara Liu
and Rory Fisher). The team has been awarded a major grant from
the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), which provides
funding to support research personnel, research trainees and some
operating expenses.
The research program is aimed primarily at understanding effects of
aging on the control of balance and movement, and developing new
approaches to prevent falls and promote safe mobility in older
adults. Within these areas, there is a wide range of projects,
encompassing fundamental studies of biomechanics and motor
control, applied research and development of assistive
technologies, and clinical falls prevention programs. A major
strength of the program is the combination of basic science,
clinical research and product design and development. The team
will include a strong emphasis on using artificial intelligence to
compensate for age-related attentional and cognitive deficits, i.e.
development of "smart" assistive devices and building
environments.
The successful applicant will have access to existing research,
design and computing facilities at the Centre for Studies in Aging
at Sunnybrook & Women's. Existing research facilities include a
unique large-scale multi-axis moving platform system for evoking
postural reactions, and associated instrumentation (motion-
analysis systems, eye-tracking systems, force plates, EMG, etc).
Development facilities include design workstations, electronics and
machine shops, and laboratories for testing of prototypes. Some
projects will tie in with the Sunnybrook Falls Clinic and/or other
ongoing clinical programs.
The initial position will be a three-year contract. A successful
review of academic performance, after three years, will lead to a
second three-year contract, after which a successful "tenure
review" would result in a Senior Scientist position with a 5-year
renewable contract. The successful applicant will be eligible for
academic appointment in the appropriate department at the
University of Toronto.

Requirements:
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in
engineering, computer science, applied mathematics,
neuroscience or a related field. Expertise in artificial intelligence,
computational intelligence, expert systems, neuro-fuzzy systems,
cognitive neuroscience and/or related fields is essential. In
addition, knowledge of biomechanics and motor control would be
advantageous.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a program of
research compatible with the team objectives, collaborate with
other team members on other team projects, obtain external grant
funding, publish and present peer-reviewed findings, disseminate
findings to healthcare professionals and consumers, identify
industrial partners and pursue commercialization of products
resulting from the research where appropriate, and participate in
recruitment and supervision of research trainees. There are no
formal teaching duties associated with this position; however, the
successful candidate is expected to apply for an appointment with
the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto, and to
participate in graduate and undergraduate education.
