  • Post-Doctoral Fellowship- University of Maryland, Baltimore

The Department of Physical Therapy has a post-doctoral fellowship
position immediately available in a research resources core (RRC-B),
which supports several interventional studies as part of the University
of Maryland’s NIA funded Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence
Center. The main interventional studies involve innovative upper and
lower extremity exercise paradigms in subjects with chronic hemiparesis
due to stroke. Core research activities involve quantitative and
standardized outcome measurements of gait, balance, strength, and
functional performance in activities of daily living using state of the
art equipment and methodologies. Parallel mechanistic studies use
transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and functional magnetic
resonance imaging (fMRI) methodologies to document neural plasticity and
cortical activation deficits as an outcome of “task-oriented” and
“forced-use” exercise rehabilitation interventions. The fellowship
period will be for 2 years from the time of appointment with a 3rd year
    optional.

    Primary Duties Include:
    · Participating in study design.
    · Performing data collection.
    · Managing large databases.
    · Analyzing and interpreting data using SPSS, Excel or other software.
    · Aiding in literature searches.
    · Participating in manuscript preparation.
    · Monitoring of laboratory supplies and expenditures.
    · Monitoring of Institutional Review Board (IRB) compliance issues.
    Training Opportunities Include:
    · Signal analysis of multiple time synchronized biophysical data
    collection systems.
    · TMS methodologies.
    · fMRI methodologies.
    · Ethical conduct of research.

Requirements: Doctoral degree (i.e., PhD, DPT, MD, DO, DSc) in an
appropriate health care or related field and a strong interest in the
physical rehabilitation sciences. The qualified candidate will possess
an understanding of and be able to utilize scientific and technical
language and symbols; the ability to troubleshoot and learn new
technologies and methodologies from published procedures; and have
superior computer word-processing, data management and analysis, and
statistical spreadsheet skills. A demonstrated willingness to learn new
techniques will be considered an advantage. A highly motivated
individual will have the opportunity to participate in research projects
    on a more independent level.

Hiring Range: Salary and benefits consistent with NIH stipend levels.

    Filing Deadline: November 1, 2002
Original Posting Date: August 1, 2002
