POST-doctoral Fellowship and Ph.D. Studentship available at Arizona State
    University
Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral Fellowship and a PhD
studentship in Motor Control under the supervision of Dr. Marco Santello at
the Department of Kinesiology, Arizona State University. The research at the
Motor Control Lab focuses on the control of grasping and the coordination of
hand muscle activity, finger movement and forces (for more infomation on Dr.
Santello's research please go to http://www.public.asu.edu/~marco1/)

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Motor Control. A post-doctoral position
is available in the NIH-supported research project "Neural Control of
Grasping". The main focus of this 4-year project is the simultaneous
coordination of hand muscle activity and grip forces underlying grasping as
a function of hand posture and task constraints. The project will involve
recording intramuscular EMG (single and multi-unit recording), multiple
contact forces/torques and data processing (mathematical modeling,
statistical analysis). The resources of the lab include a multichannel EMG
recording and muscle electrical stimulator, ATI Nano 17 force/torque
transducers, Cyberglove as well as other motion analysis systems. PhD in
Motor Control or related field such as neurophysiology, biomechanics, or
bioengineering required. Familiarity with biological signal
recording/processing, computer programming and modeling (Matlab and/or
LabView) is desirable. Dr. Santello is also a member of the NSF-IGERT
faculty, an Interdisciplinary Graduate Training program involving several
departments at ASU (Kinesiology, Bioengineering, Biology, Anthropology,
Computer Science) as well as research groups in the Phoenix area (Barrow
Neurological Institute and Good Samaritan Hospital). The research
environment is particularly conducive to foster interactions and
collaborations with other groups addressing complementary research
    questions.
The position is available starting from August 1, 2002. Application deadline
is September 1, 2002 or every 2 weeks thereafter until filled. Applications
must include a CV, a statement from the applicant including a letter of
interest, a summary of research interests, and three letters of reference.
Applications must be sent to: Marco Santello, Motor Control Lab, Department
of Kinesiology, PEBE 107B, Orange Street, Arizona State University, Tempe,
AZ 85287-0404. For enquiries, please call: 480-965-8279, or email Dr.
    Santello at: marco.santello@asu.edu.

PhD Studentship. The PhD studentship is available starting in the Fall 2002.
Students interested in graduate studies in Motor Control are encouraged to
send their application to: Jill Butler, Graduate Secretary, Exercise Science
Program, Department of Kinesiology, PEBE 107B, Orange Street, Arizona State
University, Tempe, AZ 85287-0404. For enquiries, please call: 480-965-9580.
The program brochure with the application information can be downloaded
    from: http://www.asu.edu/clas/espe/ExScPhD.htm
The program is designed to facilitate interdisciplinary and cross
disciplinary research and includes emphasis in: Motor Control, Biomechanics,
Exercise Physiology, and Sport Psychology. Applicants must have completed a
Masters Degree in an appropriate field of study. Master's in Motor Control
or Kinesiology and familiarity with data acquisition, processing and
analysis desired. Applicants need to submit: ASU Graduate and Department
application form (available on the website), GRE scores, TOEFL score (if
appropriate), letter of intent, and three letters of recommendation.
