  • POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

(Please Note that Dr. Buczek will be attending the 4th World Congress of
Biomechanics next week, and may be contacted at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.)

    OPEN POSITION:
The Shriners Hospitals for Children, Erie PA, USA, is pleased to announce an
immediate opening for a Biomechanical Engineer to join its clinical and
research team in a state-of-the-art, Motion Analysis Laboratory. Here,
Clinical needs drive parallel programs in Research and Education, with a
focus on mathematically optimized biomechanics applied to functional
    movement analyses.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
This professional member of the Biomechanics team will: (1) provide
technical support for the Laboratory by maintaining and recommending
equipment, by sharing data collection and processing responsibilities, and
by consulting on methodology for independent and team research; (2) provide
clinical support by assisting with musculoskeletal examinations, by writing
gait analysis summaries, and by attending patient care conferences with
medical staff; and (3) act as technical liaison for the Laboratory.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in Biomechanics or a
related field, and an undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline.
Experience in gait analysis will allow for immediate clinical
responsibilities, and an interest in general Biomechanics of human movement
will facilitate new protocol development. A working knowledge is needed in
three-dimensional, six degree-of-freedom kinematic and kinetic analyses, and
in Windows-based software development. Familiarity with Vicon motion
capture systems, neural networks, finite element analyses, virtual reality,
or cross-sectional anatomy will be given special consideration.

    FACILITIES:
The Motion Analysis Laboratory and adjacent offices occupy more than 1500
square feet in a new wing of this pediatric orthopedic hospital. Major
equipment includes a six-camera Vicon 370 system, three moveable AMTI force
plates, MLS surface and fine-wire EMG instrumentation, an S-VHS
observational video system, several networked computers, and Visual3D
modeling software. The city of Erie is located in the northwest corner of
Pennsylvania, along the shores of Lake Erie, and is adjacent to rolling,
tree covered hills. Several universities and medical centers offer
collaboration (including Penn State CELOS), and metropolitan areas in
Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo are within a comfortable two-hour drive.

    APPLICATION:
Please send your curriculum vitae and a brief statement of your interest in
Biomechanics to Dr. Buczek at the address below. Electronic copies are
welcome. (EOE/m/f/v/h, Shriners Hospitals for Children maintains a drug free
    workplace.)

    Frank L. Buczek, Jr., Ph.D.
    Director, Motion Analysis Laboratory
    Shriners Hospitals for Children
    1645 West 8th Street
    Erie, PA 16505, USA
