Position: Exercise Physiology
Contractual Period: Academic Year (9 months)
Salary: Negotiable and competitive
Rank: Assistant Professor (tenure track)/Associate
Professor (tenured or tenure-track)
Starting Date: January 21, 2003 or August 18, 2003
(negotiable)
Qualifications:
1. Earned doctorate with emphasis in Physiology of Exercise
(cardiovascular emphasis preferred), or closely related field.
2. Active research record related to physiological aspects of
preventive and rehabilitative exercise (emphasis on physiology of the
cardiovascular system preferred).
3. Post-doctoral appointment is desirable.
4. Extramural funding experience desirable at the assistant level;
necessary at the associate level.
5. Teaching experience in higher education preferred at the assistant
level; necessary at the associate level.
6. Demonstrated commitment to related scholarly/professional
organizations.
Responsibilities:
1. Instruct undergraduate and graduate students in the area of
Physiology of Exercise in courses such as:
Exercise Physiology (U), Advanced Exercise Physiology (U/G),
Exercise Testing and Prescription (U), Advanced Cardiovascular
Physiology (G).
2. Direct and advise graduate students in Physiology of Exercise.
3. Direct existing teaching/research laboratory and share
supervision of assistant researcher (50%).
4. Develop and maintain an active line of research; seek extramural
funding.
5. Develop and maintain liaisons with other academic units and
nonacademic agencies.
6. Engage in university and scholarly/professional service
activities.
Overview:
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is an urban research university
and one of two doctoral degree-granting institutions in the University
of Wisconsin System. The 90-acre campus is located on Milwaukee's
northeast side near Lake Michigan. The Department of Human Movement
Sciences offers BS and MS degrees in Kinesiology, a physical therapy
program has been approved, and a Ph.D. program is in development. The
BS Kinesiology Program provides academic and professional preparation
for students entering the field of Athletic Training, Exercise and
Fitness, Health & Fitness Management, and academic preparation for those
intending to pursue advanced study in the health professions or human
movement research (MS, PhD). A multidisciplinary human movement
sciences MS Kinesiology degree is offered to students who include, among
others, practicing allied health professionals (e.g., ATC, OT, PT, RN,
MD, DC) and educators. The Department also offers academic certificate
programs in the following areas: Strength and Conditioning, Older Adult
Fitness, Nutrition, and the Study of Complementary and Alternative
Medicine. Consistent with a campus goal of connecting to the community,
the Department maintains a collaborative service learning partnership
with the Milwaukee County Department on Aging that involves delivery of
fitness programs through senior centers in the metropolitan area.
Departmental instructional/research facilities include Biomechanics,
Motor Control/Learning, Psychology, Sociology, Athletic Training,
Exercise Physiology, and Human Performance Laboratories. The Exercise
Physiology Laboratory is home to a portable metabolic system and
designated chemistry space. The Human Performance Laboratory contains
stress testing and pulmonary function equipment, and underwater weighing
tank.
