The Brinson Foundation Stroke Fellowship
The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, a Northwestern University affiliated academic rehabilitation hospital is pleased to offer the Brinson Foundation Stroke Research Fellowship.
This fellowship is designed to help train postdoctoral researchers to pursue intensive research in the broad area of stroke mechanisms, pathophysiology, movement biomechanics and rehabilitation, under the supervision of one or more of the research faculty of the RIC and Northwestern University.
Potential areas of research training include, but are not limited to:
1. Pathophysiology of stroke and its sequelae
2. Brain imaging in stroke, and impact of rehabilitation interventions 3. Impaired movement kinematics and controls 4. Disturbances of reflex function 5. Robotics applications for diagnosis and treatment of motor impairments in either the upper or lower extremity. 6. Clinical research studies include drug trials evaluating restoration of function, prevention of complications, and improvement of speech and neglect. 7. Outcome studies evaluate the effects of therapeutic interventions for stroke, and develop tools for assessment of long-term outcomes
Ph.D. applicants will have been awarded a Ph.D. within the past 5 years, typically training in engineering, neuroscience, or related disciplines. MD's will have completed residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology or other related disciplines.
The award consists of a stipend of $ 50,000/yr for a minimum of 2 years. There will also be a travel allowance provided. Prospective applicants should consult relevant RIC web pages for further information about our research programs and related clinical activities. (http://sulu.smpp.nwu.edu/)
Candidates should apply by sending a letter (or email) to Dr W.Z. Rymer (see address below) in which they describe their recent research activities, and outline their future research interests. Applicants should also identify areas of stroke research that appear to be of particular interest. Please include a recent CV, and a list of 3 - 4 referees.
