  • Mechanical Engineering Faculty Position

Below is an announcement for a biomechanical engineering faculty
    position in our department.

    - tsb

    Assistant Professor of Biomechanical Engineering

A tenure-track faculty position in the field of biomechanics is
available in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University
of Delaware. Acceptable candidates will be able to establish a strong
research program within the broad area of musculoskeletal biomechanics
(e.g., the neural control of movement, modeling of skeletal muscle,
medical imaging of orthopedic tissues, biomechanics of connective
tissue, rehabilitation engineering, etc.) and teach courses in
mechanical engineering. This position is being established, in part,
through an NIH-funded Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE)
grant entitled "Osteoarthritis: prevention and treatment."

The Mechanical Engineering Department (www.me.udel.edu) has 21 faculty
members, 63 graduate students, and 251 undergraduate students. Faculty
members in our Center for Biomedical Engineering Research
(www.cber.udel.edu) currently have over $18 million in active research
grants. Many of these grants are for collaborative projects between
faculty members in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and
Physical Therapy. New faculty members will be able to interact with
many related clinical and research facilities on or near campus,
including UD's outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic, the Sports Research
Laboratories, the A.I. du Pont Children's Hospital, the Center for
Composite Materials, and the Delaware Biotechnology Institute. In
addition to having an appointment in Mechanical Engineering, the
successful candidate also would have an appointment in our
interdisciplinary graduate program in Biomechanics & Movement Science
that attracts doctoral students with backgrounds in engineering,
    clinical sciences, and kinesiology.

The University of Delaware is a publicly supported private university
with a total enrollment of about 18,000 students. It is located in the
attractive community of Newark, which is close to large industrial,
academic and research institutions in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore
and Washington, D.C. For information about the university, visit our
    website www.udel.edu.

Applications will be accepted (or considered) until November 1, 2002 or
until a suitable candidate is identified. Send a detailed CV, a teaching
and research plan, and the names of at least three references to
Biomechanics Faculty Search Committee Chair, Department of Mechanical
Engineering, University of Delaware, 126 Spencer Laboratories, Newark,
DE 19716. The CV and letters of reference (if obtained) shall be shared
with departmental faculty. Inquiries can be directed to Professor Thomas
    S. Buchanan at (302) 831-2410 or buchanan@me.udel.edu. The University of
Delaware is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications
from members of minority groups and women.
