PhD student position in Mechanical Engineering / Biomechanics
    Vienna University of Technology, Austria

    The research project titled
'Stationary cycle for paraplegics with automatic individual parameter
    adjustment',
will start in January 2003 in cooperation of the Institutes of Machine
    Elements,
Mechanics, and Machine Dynamics/Measurement Technology at the TU Vienna.

The aim of this research project is the development of a stationary
cycle for paraplegics which includes a test system and an adaptation
routine for individual determination of the optimal stimulation pattern
(crank angle interval for the single stimulated muscles) and the
optimal rider/cycle geometry. The muscle forces are induced by
    Functional Electrical Stimulation FES.

In total there will work 2 PhD students and several master students on
this project, together with faculty members of the institutes. Practical
tests will be carried out in cooperation with rehabilitation centers in
    Austria and Switzerland.

    Description of the open position:
-) further development of a FES muscle model and simulation of FES
    cycling,
-) development of the mechanical design of a stationary cycle for
    paraplegics,
-) development of the test routines for FES cycling,
-) practical tests with paraplegics in rehabilitation centers.

The candidates should either be mechanical engineers with strong
interest in biomedical engineering or biomechanical engineers with good
    engineering background.

The position is funded for 2 years.
