  • PhD/Postdoc position in neuroprosthetics

In the frame of the German collaborative research center „Sensormotorik“
    (SFB 462)
the Zentralinstitut für Medizintechnik (ZIMT), Technische Universität
    München, and
the Neurological Clinic Bad Aibling seek for a

Research Assistant (PhD candidate or Postdoc)
    in the area of Neuroprosthetics.

    Tasks
Project goal is the development of neuroprostheses for standing and
    walking of
paraplegic patients. By means of artificial electrical stimulation,
    neuroprostheses can
partly restore lost motor functions of patients with upper motor neuron
    lesions.
Challenges in the development of neuroprostheses are the generation of
    controlled
and functional body movements, the compensation of perturbations, the
    integration of
voluntary motor interactions and patient intention as well as the
    achievement of a simple
handling and a high acceptance for patients and clinicians.
The tasks of the future team member will be the design of
    model-supported controllers,
the development and miniaturization of sensors, the system integration
    as well as
experimental evaluation of the developed components. The work will be
    performed in
close cooperation with the ZIMT, the Neurological Clinic Bad Aibling,
    the Neurological
Clinic Grosshadern, and the Institute of Automatic Control Engineering,
    Technische Universitaet Muenchen.

    Requirements
The responsible, successful, young candidate should have a
    Dipl.-Ing./Dr.-Ing. (or
M.Sc./Ph.D.) degree in Biomedical, Electrical, or Mechanical
    Engineering. Ability of
German language is desired. The work will be characterized by an
interdisciplinary engagement in the fields of electrical engineering,
    computer science, precision
engineering, and medicine. Thus, an interdisciplinay cooperation with
    partners in the
mentioned fields will be fundamental. Ability to work in a team is a
    basic prerequisite
    for the position.

    General Conditions
It exists the possibility to pursue the Dr.-Ing. degree. Furthermore,
    there is the
option to change the position into two 50%-positions, in order to
    participate in the
Master course of Medical Engineering and graduate with a Master of
    Science
(M.Sc.) degree (for details look at http://www.zimt.tum.de). Earliest
    start will be
January 1st, 2003. The position is limited to 4 years. Salary is paid
    according to the
German "BAT II a" rate, which is approximately 3.000,- Euros per month
    before
tax and social insurance. Handicapped persons will be preferred at equal
    qualifications.
The university is willing to increase the percentage of females.
    Therefore female
candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
