DIRECTOR
NOLL RESEARCH CENTER
THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY
UNIVERSITY PARK
The University Park campus of The Pennsylvania State University invites
responses to a national search for a Director of the newly expanded Noll
Research Center. The Noll Research Center is an exciting new initiative,
combining and capitalizing on the strengths of two distinguished centers
Noll Laboratory and the Center for Locomotion Studies (CELOS) and
additional faculty investigators sharing the same research mission. The
mission of the NEW center is to be a world-class, multidisciplinary center
of research excellence dedicated to investigating the complex interactions
between mobility, physical activity and health. Current Noll Research
Center scientists pursue a research agenda focusing on cardiovascular
health and disease and neuromuscular and musculoskeletal health and
disease, including metabolic approaches. Within each of these areas, Noll
scientists will engage in research at multiple levels of scientific
inquiry, including improving our understanding of the basic mechanisms that
underlie the conditions being studied, the consequences of these conditions
for health and well-being, and the development of effective activity-based
intervention strategies for maintaining or improving health.
The director of the Noll Research Center will coordinate and manage the
daily operations of the center through direct interactions with individual
investigators. The successful candidate will be a distinguished senior
scholar with a distinguished record of extramural funding who, building on
the strong tradition and national reputations of Noll and CELOS, has the
vision and leadership to shape an exciting new enterprise which expands
that reputation and fosters and facilitates world-class research at Penn
State. We seek a director who will exert leadership in developing a broad
portfolio of research beyond his or her own interests, including center and
program project grants; assemble and lead teams of distinguished
researchers; and excite and motivate a wide range of scholars to join in
building the center.
The academic rank of the appointment is Professor with tenure in the
Department of Kinesiology or other appropriate academic unit in the College
of Health and Human Development (http://www.hhdev.psu.edu/). Currently,
15-20 faculty members are faculty or faculty affiliates of the center.
Their interests cover a wide scope of topics central to the mission of the
Center. The total research portfolio of integral faculty for 2002 is
approximately $3,200,000. Several web sites provide more information about
current faculty interests, including: www.noll.psu.edu, www.celos.psu.edu
and www.hhdev.psu.edu/kines.
Founded in 1855, Penn State is Pennsylvania's only land grant university
and has a broad mission of teaching, research and public service. It
enrolls approximately 80,000 students at 24 campus locations statewide, and
offers instruction in more than 160 baccalaureate and 150 graduate
programs. The University Park campus, with an enrollment of some 41,000
students, is Penn State's administrative and research hub. The campus is
located in central Pennsylvania, adjacent to the community of State
College, which enjoys high rankings for cultural opportunities, local
schools, and quality of life. Other Penn State campuses, including the
College of Medicine at the Hershey Medical Center and the Dickinson School
of Law in Carlisle, play a vital role in the University's overall mission.
The University is dedicated to the integration of teaching, research, and
service, and to the attainment of cultural and ethnic diversity. Penn State
has established a Dual Career Office to support and assist dual career
couples moving to the university. For more information about the
university, visit the web site: http://www.psu.edu.
Direct inquiries to Dr. W. Larry Kenney, chair of the search committee, at
