The Dynamics of Human Motion (DOHM) Laboratory in the School of Biomedical
Engineering at Dalhousie University is currently accepting applications for
the position of laboratory research technician. The primary research
interests within the laboratory are in orthopaedic biomechanics related to
joint function, disease, injury and repair. The individual filling this
position will be responsible for the day to day operation of all equipment,
data collection and data management within the laboratory.
The 1500 square foot gait laboratory is equipped with two 3020 Optotrak
position sensors (Northern Digital), a five camera motion analysis system
(Qualisys), two AMTI force platforms (with magnetic air-bearing base plate
mounts for easy repositioning/reconfiguring within a 4x4m pit), an eight
channel Bortec EMG system, a Cybex dynamometer and a radiostereometric
analysis (RSA) system.
Responsibilities for the position include:
1) Database Management: data includes gait, EMG, health outcome
questionnaires and RSA.
2) Maintenance of the Laboratory: maintain laboratory equipment in working
order; maintain inventory of supplies; perform routine equipment
maintenance and repairs
3) Subject testing: schedule and contact subjects to be tested; prepare
subjects and equipment for testing; operate the three-dimensional motion
analysis systems, force platforms and EMG system during testing; customize
existing in-house software (MATLAB)
4) Provide technical assistance to graduate students, clinicians and
researchers within the laboratory
Qualifications:
A minimum of a BSc Degree (i.e. engineering, or kinesiology) is required.
Individuals must be able to work with a clinical population, particularly
individuals affected by knee osteoarthritis.
Preference will be given to those individuals with:
1) experience in computer programming using MATLAB.
2) previous experience working in a gait/motion laboratory with human subjects.
3) knowledge of theories, principles, practices and techniques in biomechanics.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
