Graduate Teaching Assistantships and Project Assistantship

The Department of Human Movement Sciences at the University of
Wisconsin - Milwaukee offers a Master of Science degree program
emphasizing research in the human movement sciences. The program
provides instruction and research opportunities for students interested
in studying the biopsychosocial aspects of human movement. The thrust
of the curriculum is the integration of the body of knowledge
fundamental to the science of human movement through study in at least
three of the five sub-disciplines represented by faculty in the program
(Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Motor Control, Psychological Aspects
of Physical Activity and Sociological Aspects of Physical Activity).
The Department has graduate teaching assistant (GTA) positions in four
areas (outlined in more detail below), and a project assistant (PA)
position in our community-based Older Adult Fitness Program. Only
students accepted to the Human Movement Sciences graduate program will
be considered for a GTA appointment.

Criteria for admission to the graduate program include:
    1. GRE scores (Verbal + Quantitative = 1000)
    2. Undergraduate grade point average (minimum of 2.75 on 4.0
    scale)
    3. Appropriate coursework history

Program application may be made online
(http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/Grad_Sch/) or materials may be obtained by
contacting the Graduate School (414.229.4982)) or the department's
Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Barbara Hart (414.229.6080 or hart@uwm.edu).
    Our web-site (http://www.uwm.edu/SAHP/gp/hk/ghkmenu.html ) has
    additional information.

To apply for a GTA appointment, candidates shall also submit:
    1. A formal letter of application
    2. A resume / vita that presents information and experiences
    relevant to GTA duties
    3. Two letters of recommendation attesting to the candidate's
    abilities to perform GTA duties

Candidates may include their GTA application materials along with their
documentation for admission to the program. For full consideration for
a GTA appointment, materials must be received by March 15, 2003.

Appointments begin August 25, 2003 and are for one academic year (9
months), renewable, and dependent on funding. GTAs are required to
enroll in a minimum of 6 semester hours to maintain eligibility. GTA
appointments are half-time and carry a waiver of tuition plus a stipend
of approximately $10,000 per academic year. Students are responsible to
    pay fees.
