POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
School of Engineering
University of Kansas
Rank: Open
POSITION: The School of Engineering at the University of Kansas (KU)
invites nominations and applications for two positions (one senior and one
junior) in the Bioengineering area. For one of the positions, applicants
should have demonstrated strong research interests and expertise in the area
of biomechanics. Although all areas of biomechanics will be considered,
primary consideration will be given to applicants with experimental and/or
computational experience in biomaterials, biomedical instrumentation or
cardiovascular engineering. For the second position, applicants should have
demonstrated strong research interests and expertise in chemical engineering
related to biomedical applications. Specific research areas include (but
are not limited to) protein engineering, metabolic engineering, drug
delivery, gene therapy, tissue engineering, and structural genomics.
Rank is open for either position subject to the constraint that we prefer to
hire one junior faculty (as Assistant Professor) and one senior faculty (as
Associate Professor or Full Professor including as Distinguished Professor).
Assistant Professor applicants should have demonstrated high potential for
success in engineering education, research, and professional service, while
Associate and Full Professor applicants should have outstanding records in
these areas. The recruited faculty members will be expected to teach both
undergraduate and graduate level courses, develop graduate level
bioengineering courses, and support departmental growth. They will also be
expected to establish a strong externally funded research program, supervise
graduate student research, and foster collaboration with other departments
including those at the KU Medical Center. At the Full Professor level, we
seek a dynamic leader with a demonstrated record of research and academic
excellence to spearhead the development of strong bio-related research and
education ties between engineering and other disciplines such as medicine,
chemistry, and biology. The efforts of the Full Professor, in combination
with growing faculty research efforts, are expected to eventually result in
the formation of a multidisciplinary bioengineering research center and a
bioengineering graduate degree program.
BIOENGINEERING FOCUS AT KU: The University of Kansas recently selected
Bioengineering as an important growth area with respect to interdisciplinary
research and education. The School of Engineering plans to further build
its faculty in these areas and to spearhead the formation a Bioengineering
Center of Excellence, characterized by vigorous interdisciplinary research
and graduate degree programs in these areas. Excellent opportunities exist
for developing multidisciplinary research programs involving faculty from
the School of Medicine, the School of Allied Health, Pharmaceutical
Chemistry and Biological Sciences. In addition, the Kansas City Area Life
Sciences Institute (www.kclifesciences.org) will help to serve as the
coordinating body for fostering collaborative relationships among the major
life sciences research institutions including KU and the Stowers Institute
for Medical Research.
The home department of the recruited faculty will be either the Department
of Mechanical Engineering (ME) or the Department of Chemical and Petroleum
Engineering (CPE) depending upon research interests and qualifications.
ME DEPARTMENT: The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.S.,
Master's and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering. It currently has14
faculty members, and approximately 220 undergraduates and 50 graduate
students. The department has been developing biomechanics as a focus
research area and presently has five faculty members investigating
orthopedic biomechanics, bone mechanics, biomaterials, biocontrols, and
biodynamics. Other departmental research areas include computer-aided
manufacturing, computational mechanics, composite materials, and
thermo-fluid science. For more information on these activities, see
http://www.engr.ku.edu/me/faculty-staff_pg.htm and
../research_programs.htm.
CPE DEPARTMENT (www.cpe.engr.ku.edu): The department offers B.S., Master's
and Ph.D. degrees in chemical and petroleum engineering. The department has
13 faculty members, approximately 200 undergraduate students and 45 graduate
students. Four faculty members have ongoing collaborative research programs
with pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry departments. The diversity of
funded research areas include improved oil recovery processes, fuel cell
design, plasma processing of electronic materials, advanced computational
techniques in chemical and petroleum engineering, membrane reactors for
partial oxidations, advanced process design, fluid phase equilibria,
supercritical fluid applications and controlled-release formulation
development. For more information on these activities, see
www.cpe.engr.ku.edu.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Earned PhD degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering,
biomedical engineering or a closely related field.
2. Demonstrated experience in bioengineering related research (in areas
described in the "POSITION" section) as either part of the PhD dissertation
or evidenced by research publications.
3. Either a proven record of research, scholarship and graduate student
training (for appointment at the Full and Associate Professor ranks) or
evidence of strong potential for research and scholarship (for appointment
at the Assistant Professor rank).
4. Ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the home
department.
5. For appointment at either the Associate or the Full Professor rank,
applicants must be eligible for a tenured faculty appointment at the
appropriate rank at KU. The Faculty Senate Handbook lists the criteria for
appointment at the Associate or Full Professor ranks.
http://www.ku.edu/~unigov/fachand1998.html.
ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT AS A DISTINGUISHED
PROFESSOR (http://www.ku.edu/~unigov/fachand1998.html)
1. Nominees must be truly distinguished as scholars in appropriate fields.
Although this criterion is highly dependent on the breadth of the area, a
nominee should generally rank among the most distinguished scholars in the
field in this country as well as be recognized internationally as a leader
in the field.
2. Nominees should have proven records of contribution to the growth and
success of their institutions, colleagues and students.
3. Nominees should demonstrate some contribution to other fields and
departments related to their own, and in participation in University affairs
generally.
4. Nominees must expect to identify themselves with the community and the
State, and their appointment should serve the needs of the community and
State in special ways perhaps not generally accomplished with regular
professional appointments.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Experience in multidisciplinary bioengineering related research in areas
described in the "POSITION" section, and potential to interact with
researchers at KU and the KU Medical Center.
2. For Associate or Full Professor appointments, a strong track record of
externally funded research, and demonstrated capability to interact with
researchers in the life science disciplines to develop successful
multidisciplinary research programs.
3. Ability to teach core courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in
chemical engineering or mechanical engineering.
SALARY RANGE AND APPOINTMENT:
The positions are available beginning August 18, 2003. Base appointment is
9 months. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with
qualifications and experience.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
Letters of application or nominations should be sent to: Bioengineering
Search Committee Chair, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering,
University of Kansas, Learned Hall, 1530 W. 15th Street, Room 4006,
Lawrence, Kansas, 66045. A complete application should include a letter of
application, curriculum vitae, a description of research and teaching
interests and the names, addresses and phone numbers of three references.
Review of applications begins March 15, 2003 and will continue until
selections are made.
The University of Kansas is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action
Employer. The University encourages applications from underrepresented
group members. Federal and state legislation prohibits discrimination on
the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, age,
