1) Research Assistant/Fellow
Finite element analysis of the implanted proximal tibia
In general, the performance of total knee replacements are good. However,
failures do occur and some designs are more prone to failure than others.
One reason for this difference could be small variations in surgical
technique. This project aims to develop an explicit finite element model to
assess the effect of surgical technique, in particular component alignment
and soft tissue balance, on the performance of total knee joint replacement.
This project is funded by Action Research, a UK based charity.
Applicants are expected to hold at least a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering
or equivalent discipline and a PhD in a relevant area is desirable. A
working knowledge of finite element analysis is essential and in particular
explicit finite element formulations. Additional knowledge of biomechanics,
particularly related to total knee joint replacement, would be advantageous.
Salary in the range of £18,265 to £20,311 on Research Grade 1B/A

2) PhD studentships
The Bioengineering Science Research Group have a number of fully funded PhD
opportunities for EU/UK status applicants, although for excellent applicants
studentships for non EU/UK may be available. PhD programmes start on 1st Oct
2003. Applicantions are rarely considered after the end of August.
Maintenance grants of between £8,000 - £11,000 (tax-free) per annum are
likely to be available for appropriately qualified applicants (holding a
good honours degree, or its equivalent, in engineering, materials science or
relevant physical sciences) applying for the academic year 2003/2004.
University studentships are also available to cover fees and project running
cost.
This years project titles are currently being defined but are likely to be
related to the assessment of total joint replacement using either numerical
(finite element) or experimental techniques.
