Dear Colleagues:
The idea originated during the BioNet initiative of a grand
challenge that we called the Living Human Project already received,
although in its preliminary phase, many positive reactions. We are
working hard to submit a big proposal aimed to develop the
Information Technology infrastructure required to make this ambitious
project. In the meanwhile it would be nice to have a chance to meet
all together, all interested in contributing to this grand challenge,
as soon as possible. A good opportunity could be the meeting Manuel
Doblare, Helder Rodrigues and Miguel Cerrolaza are organising in
September in Saragoza, Spain, the International Conference in
Computational Bioengineering. The organisers replied with interest to
my suggestion to set-up a mini-symposium, fully dedicated to the
Living Human Project.
Before we start to invest time and effort in organising this event,
we would like to understand who would and could participate to such a
mini-symposium. As the deadline for the submission of abstracts is
very close, I would propose that those who are interested submit
their abstract, specifying that they would like to present it in the
Living Human Project mini-symposium. Without any intention to limit
the range of ideas, this may be a short list of possible topics:
- Protocols for data collection: medical imaging, functional imaging,
motion capture, in vitro analysis of joint kinematics, etc.
- Algorithms for data processing: classification, segmentation,
registration, synchronisation, extraction of biomechanical indicators
from medical imaging data, etc.
- Methods to combine data from different subjects: creation of
statistical atlases, production of normative data, statistical
description of functional anatomy
- Computer simulation of the biomechanics of the human body:
musculo-skeletal models, cardio-vascular models, etc.
- Technologies for combining data and simulations to create the
Living Human Model
Once we have the felling of what level of interest this initiative
may raise, we shall discuss in detail with the organisers what is the
best format to adopt. For sure it would be nice to have colleagues
presenting similar initiatives such as the Physiome Project, the
Digital Human Project, and so on. But before we try to contact them,
it is important to know the level of interest. So, please submit
abstracts and also let me know if you plan to join. We do not need
to be thousands, but a small, well-focused and motivated group may be
seminal of larger initiatives.
The Instructions for submitting abstracts can be found at
http://www.iccb2003.org. the abstract is maximum one page and must
be submitted before April 15, 2003.
