5th International Bone Fluid Flow Workshop
Organ to Cell, Lab Bench to Bedside, on Earth and in Space
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
(Deadline April 15, 2003)
On behalf of the local and international organizing committees for the
5th International Bone Fluid Flow Worskhop, I am pleased to invite you
and your research collaborators to submit an abstract for our upcoming
meeting, September 17-18, 2003! The past decade has been a time of
revival for the field of bone fluid flow. The first workshop to review
the state of the art and to discuss new developments in the field was
held in New York in 1997. The current workshop is designed to provide a
forum at an important crossroads in which the field of bone fluid flow
is on the cusp of translation to the clinic.
The goals of the 5th Bone Fluid Flow Workshop are threefold. First,
similar to previous workshops, recent breakthroughs related to fluid
flow through bone will be presented. Second, past assumptions regarding
fluid flow through bone will be explored by addressing parallel
phenomena in other biophysical systems and discussing their
implications
for bone physiology. Third, critical open questions will be identified;
the answers to these questions are expected to push the field into the
future, providing a basis for translational research.
As a leader in the field of bone and fluid flow, we hope that you will
join us for discussion at this important crossroads!
We have organized an exciting program
with scientific
sessions planned in the areas of
* Contribution of bone water to organ function and tissue mechanics
* Fluid flow effects on cell function
* Fluid-structure interactions at the subcellular and multicellular
level
* Bone tissue engineering
* Clinical implications of bone fluid flow
* Role of fluid flow in microgravity-induced osteopenia

to microgravity and their effects on bone"
* Antonios Mikos, Ph.D. (Rice University) "Fluid flow in tissue
engineering of 3-dimensional bone scaffolds"
* Felix Wehrli, Ph.D. (University of Pennsylvania) "NMR studies of
osteoid water"
