I received replies from Steve Vaitl, Jon Dingwell, and
Friso Hagman. Thank you all. No response yet from our
Taiwanese subscriber.
It was probably either the Klez virus or the Gop virus. If
you have posted to Biomch-L in the last four months, and you
suspect that you have been infected by a faked reply to your
posting, please take appropriate action. It is best to use
professional virus scanning software to do this.
If you are infected, you may be sitting on a timebomb. This
particular copy of the virus that infected our subscriber in Taiwan
had been collecting e-mail addresses since at least January 30th
and then it suddenly started sending itself everywhere yesterday.
It may do additional damage to your own filesystem as well.
Those of you who are at Keele University (UK) or at Universidade
Federal de São Carlos (Brazil) have no clue what this is about.
Their e-mail systems refused my previous posting because there
still was something virus-like about it. Those mail servers
seem to be well protected!
This event highlights the importance of protection against
viruses. Please consider the following:
- Many viruses exploit vulnerabilities in Microsoft Outlook.
You - and others - are safer if you use other e-mail
software. This is not because other software is better, it
is just that the virus makers spend most of their energy
on Outlook because it is what most people use.
- Invest in a good virus scanning program.
- Never, never, never click on suspicious e-mail attachments,
especially if the filename ends in .exe, .pif, .scr, or .bat.
Don't be fooled by double filename extensions, such as .gif.exe.
It is the second extension that tells your mail client what to
do with the file.
Now let's get back to biomechanics.
