Postponement of the XXIst Symposium
of the
International Society of Biomechanics in Sports
It is with great disappointment that the Executive Board of the
International Society of Biomechanics in Sports announces the postponement
of its XXI International Symposium scheduled for August 26-30, 2003 in
Beijing, China . With the uncertainty over the progress of Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in this region of the world, published
admonitions about SARS from the World Health Organization and other
national health organizations, restrictions on travel levied by many of our
universities, and a concern for the health of our membership and guests, we
have been compelled to make this difficult decision.
The XXI International Symposium promised to be another outstanding
forum for the presentation and exchange of information on sports
biomechanics. Dr. Qing Wang, President of the Local Organizing Committee;
and Dr. Youlian Hong, Vice President of Conferences of the International
Society of Biomechanics in Sports; and the members of the Local Organizing
Committee were well on their way to hosting an outstanding event. We
sincerely appreciate the excellent work that they have put into this
process and intend that ISBS 2003 is only a postponed.
Currently, the plans of the International Society of Biomechanics
in Sports are to continue with its next symposium scheduled for Ottawa,
Canada in the summer of 2004. Following this symposium in Canada, we hope
to be able to bring to fruition the work of Dr. Qing Wang, Dr. Youlian
Hong, and the Local Organizing Committee by having the 2005 symposium in
Beijing, China.
Dr. Eugene W. Brown
President ISBS
