To all of you out there in BIOMCH-L land:
What is the correct pronunciation of the word "eccentric" as it
is used with the word "contraction" or "action" of a skeletal
muscle? Is it "ECK-sentric" or "EE-sentric?" I first learned
the latter pronunciation, but have not been able to find any
documentation for this. The former appears in dictionaries, and
we use this pronunciation when we describe eccentric forces (and
odd personalities, etc.). Why do so many people pronounce it
"EE-sentric?" Any ideas? I would appreciate hearing from anyone
who knows the answer to this one. Thanks.
