University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). The University of Texas Medical
Branch, situated on the eastern end of Galveston Island, is the oldest
existing medical school and health science campus in Texas. UTMB consists
of four schools and two institutes: the Graduate School of Biomedical
Sciences, the School of Allied Health Sciences, the School of Medicine, and
the School of Nursing. It is one of 14 components of the University of
Texas System, which includes four Health Science Centers. Excellence in
research and education are of primary importance to the University of Texas
Medical Branch, which has devoted approximately 212,000 square feet of
space to research activities. During the past fiscal year, the University
received more than $100 million in federal and private funds to support
about 400 extramural research and training projects. The University of
Texas Medical Branch has an excellent reputation for recruiting and
employing students, staff and faculty from disadvantaged backgrounds. In
1995 the American Association of Medical Schools listed UTMB at the 90% in
numbers of underrepresented minorities, including both faculty and students.
Applications from women, minorities, and persons with a disability are
    actively encouraged.
