Here is today's listing. As usual, it has been difficult to get information
from outside the USA. At the ISB meeting in New Zealand, it was mentioned
to me that people may not want to share any information that gives them an
advantage in the fierce competition for limited funds.
While this reluctance to share information is understandable, there is also
the possibility that "a rising tide lifts all boats". If nothing else, these
postings will cause more good proposals from biomechanists being sent to
granting agencies. This will immediately increase the amount of money going
to biomechanics, because we are usually competing with researchers from other
disciplines. Also the quality of funded projects will be better because
of the increased competition. All of this will improve the reputation of
biomechanics, and this helps everyone's chances of getting their work
funded.
I will be the first to admit that we cannot always afford to be idealistic.
You might just submit information about the funding programs that you are
not applying for. But note that I have never withheld information about
the programs that I apply for.
Please follow the example of our regular contributors, Dan Ferris and Uwe
Kersting, and send contributions to bogert@bme.ri.ccf.org. We are covering
USA and New Zealand quite well, but contributions from other parts of the
world would be greatly appreciated. Surely we should not leave idealism
to the Americans...
