The BioEngineering Group at the University of Calgary is searching for
an Alberta Ingenuity (AIF) Scholar in Biomaterials / Tissue Engineering
with outstanding credentials, including proven leadership skills,
ability to collaborate, breadth and depth of knowledge, demonstrated
research excellence, and strong communications skills. This tenure-track
position will complement the eight new junior positions created at the
University to establish Biomedical Engineering Specialization options in
all undergraduate engineering degree programmes.

The successful applicant will be expected to provide the leadership,
innovation and research skills to establish an AIF Alberta
BioEngineering Centre at the University of Calgary and will play a
critical role in synthesizing research initiatives in BioEngineering,
enabling new discoveries and research developments.

The research programme of The AIF Biomaterials Scholar will complement
the leading BioEngineering research currently being conducted at the
University of Calgary. Three strategic research areas in biomaterials
include 1) Tissue Engineering, 2) In Vivo Tissue Monitoring, and 3)
Biofilms. Specifically, the AIF Scholar will develop an innovative
research programme focused on basic and applied research related to
Biomaterials. The Scholar will be responsible for developing
transdisciplinary research activities between engineering and science
disciplines. Applications will be in the areas of agriculture, medicine,
device development and biotechnology.

The AIF Alberta BioEngineering Centre will align directly with the
University of Calgary (UC) strategic plan. The UC has identified
“Advancing Health and Wellness” as one of its four key strategic
academic priorities. The strong multidisciplinary BioEngineering
research programme forms a critical component and strong potential for
realizing progress in this priority area. The programme has strengths
in, among others, the following areas: 1) Biomechanics and Numerical
Modeling and Simulation, 2) Computer modeling of physiological systems
(i.e. the Physiome) 3) Tissue Engineering, 4) Imaging and Signal
Processing and analysis of Biological Systems, 5) Bioinstrumentation,
and 6) Orthopaedic BioEngineering.

Research in these areas is carried out in laboratories in the Calgary
Centre for Innovative Technology (Engineering), the Human Performance
Laboratory (Kinesiology) and facilities in the Faculty of Medicine,
including the Seaman Diagnostic Imaging Centre and the McCaig Centre for
Joint Injury and Arthritis Research. Expansion of the latter into the
Health Research Innovation Centre (under construction) will occur in the
next three years. All laboratories are well equipped with
state-of-the-art equipment, with recent new infusions from the Canada
Foundation for Innovation matched by Alberta Government agencies and
private funding.

The City of Calgary is nestled in the foothills of the majestic Rocky
Mountains and is approximately an hour away from world class skiing and
hiking, outstanding camping, golf and the beautiful scenery of
Kananaskis Country and Banff National Park. Calgary and surrounds have
a population of approximately 1 million. Calgary is the fastest growing
